The sun has arrived and Sean gets out to build raised beds and has a look back at how the seeds are growing from last month. Plus, Sean takes a trip to the RHS.

For some reason I can not get strawberries to grow, I have tried from seed to starter plants, have tried pots, raised beds and in the ground, have tried sandy area and well composted areas. for what ever reason strawberries and I do not get on here in Minnesota.
Thanks buddy I will be having a look at the link to the fountain tonight any chance you maybe able to look at my vids any advice welcome finding it exciting and overwhelming at the same time
You like to ask BBC to put your shows on BBC 2 and I will watch you everyday
We’re easing out of the deep freeze here in Illinois, and the greenery makes me long for spring. We might be slower at starting off here, but we have hotter summers, so we can grow more exotic stuff out of greenhouses, compared to northern Europe.

Now artichokes is something I’ve consistently failed with in 3 years here on my little smallholding estate, along with any other perennial vegetable such as rhubarb and asparagus! Either they’re swamped by weeds or just swamped and drowned by rains and poor drainage… Perhaps they need their own dedicated, well-prepared raised bed in the main kitchen garden!
There will be a video showing this later in the season. We will also show how to get more bees into the garden by having a bumblebee hive.
I grow Globe Artichokes and people often think it’s Cardoons. May try and find some space to grow a cardoon as well now that you’ve mentioned it.
It’s interesting you mention the couve tronchuda from Victorian Kitchen Garden… in the same episode he was also after cardoons. In this years little bit of synchronicity, you’re growing the couve tronchuda while guess what I ordered, after watching Victorian Kitchen Garden and all – the cardoon seeds. They have just arrived, winging their way from the UK to Japan, so we’ll see how they go!
Sounds like a pollination issue. You could plant plenty of bee attracting flowers around your garden, and also try pollinating them manually. Basically, remove a male flower (the one that’s just a long stem and flower), strip off the petals, and insert the “male organ” into the female flowers (the ones with a little fruit at the base) and give it a jiggle… Look, you’ll figure it out
I was never able to grow a damn pumpkin! They start developing great but end up just dying back without a single fruit.. I live in Portugal btw
In the summer I’m hoping to travel around to show other allotments. Thanks for your support.
Love your show here in the USA. I am fascinated at your allotments there. You grow so much in such a small space, its wonderful. Well done.( Erwin Tennessee)
They need a firm bottom. Will show when it becomes the time.
Problem with blowing sprouts
Thanks Claire, I forgot I had it.
Another good show – I love the fountain !
Guess I have no more excuse to postpone sowing now I’m a bit better. I only wish the garden elves would come and remove the couch grass from the allotment
Hi. The link to the solar fountain is now in the description box above. Let me know if you get one – send us a pic! Thanks.

Hi Sean..Great vid..Its good to see things happening, plants always know when spring is coming.
.. its great, i want one.
I have a question about some Iris’s that have stopped flowering.Do you know anything about them? Have you given up on the candle, and paraffin heater, by the way?
Also, like everyone else seems to be asking, where did you get the solar powered fountain.
cheers.
Dave from North Shields.
