Winter blues

It’s difficult to imagine summer when the ground is covered with a foot of snow. Work has stopped for the time being. Building of raised beds, laying of water pipes and sowing of seeds – nothing is happening.

Even at this time of year there is activity of the allotment site but it’s more social than digging for victory. The time is mostly spent chatting and discussing the latest antics of the committee while huddling in candle lit shed and supping on warm mugs of tea. Throughout the site there isn’t a sole on their plot but every once in a while you can see the warm glow of a candle and silhouettes of gardening against the frosted panes of glass.

Picking rows of runner beans, digging up potatoes and tasting the first strawberries all seem a distant memory at the moment. Washing down another mug of tea memories we recall the highlights of last summer.
